How a webring works
Before search engines were good, people grouped related homepages into a circle. Each page carried three linked rings — like the Olympics, but only three: where you were, where you are, where you’re going. Follow it long enough and you return to where you started. That is the whole invention.
Circlet is that protocol with the spam scraped off. Rings are themed on purpose. Sites join in the open. There is no ranking, no follow graph, and no recommendation engine pretending to know you.
The chain on a member page is the same chain on Circlet. Open The Garden and walk a homestead. Click the left ring to go back, the center to stay with the ring, the right to go on.
- Start a ring, or pick one that already has a point of view.
- Add your public address. Paths on Circlet work too, for experiments.
- Paste the widget. Three rings: were, are, going.
Guestbooks still matter. Leave a note on the index if a ring treated you well.
